Diagnostic characters of the family Vespidae:
The pronotum with posterodorsal margin U-shaped, and with posterolateral apex acute and strongly produced above anterior margin of tegula; the forewing with an elongate discal cell, hindwing usually with distinct jugal lobe but sometimes without; inner spur has an elongate chitinous comb (short in eumenines) and is strongly curved; metasoma sessile, or petiolate to subsessile.
