Essential solid mechanics
Pham Duc Chinh
This Book has been developed from the lectures given by the author to the graduate students at Institute of Mechanics - VAST - Hanoi during 2011-2019 years. Its contents are based on the author's own reading, research, teaching experiences, and the broad literature given in the Bibliography.~Chapter 1 introduces the basic concepts of solid mechanics, involving the displacement, strain, stress, energy, and deformable solid bodies. Small deformation elasticity and visco-elasticity fundamentals are discussed in the Chapter 2.~Chapter 3 concerns the thin structures with respective simplifying approximation\break assumptions: beams, plates, and shells.~Chapters 4, 5, 6 contain main research results of the author and collaborators on plasticity theory, shakedown\break theorems, and applications. Physical fields and their interactions are presented in Chapter~7.~Fracture mechanics and related problems are considered in the Chapter~8.~The book is completed with the supplements overviewing some additional specific topics.
Solid Mechanics is a large field. The selection and arrangement of the subjects reflect the author's own view point. Another important topics (of Solid Mechanics) - Micro-mechanics and Homogenization, which is a major field of the author, would be presented separately in a future Monograph.
